I really hate it when we let them do this

From CNN's coverage of the DNC last night, in the last two paragraphs of a piece about the Republican staffers in town to rebut the Democrats' message:

On the walls of the GOP war room, the Democratic senators are listed along with the National Journal's rating of their voting records. Kerry's is the most liberal; Edwards is No. 4.

Those ratings are from 2003, when both senators were out campaigning and returned to vote on legislation that was critical to the core Democrats. When the National Journal examined their long-term voting record, Kerry is No. 11 among the senators in terms of his liberal voting record, and Edwards is No. 25.

John Kerry is the most liberal Senator in the country. John Edwards is almost as liberal as John Kerry. The Kerry/Edwards ticket is made up of the number 1 and 4 liberals in the Senate. Kerry is so liberal he's way out of the mainstream of the country. Edwards pretends to be a moderate Democrat, but he's actually the 4th most liberal US Senator. To quote the hysterical but often juvenile (or should that be juvenile but often hysterical?) Farkers of the world, I call BullShiat. The GOP has been spouting that sound bite for weeks now, and this is the first article I've seen present the counter-claim. Blather on, neo-cons. Some of us are actually paying attention.

Why doesn't the so-called liberal press ever call the Republican attack machine on this type of lie? Why do they get away with pretending Kerry is a flip-flopper (this one's so egregious it needs a whole blog post - look for it later this week)? Why can they claim W. completed his (already lame) National Guard service during the Vietnam War when the records indicate he was nowhere to be seen? Why is it a national disaster when a Democratic President lies about having an affair, but its not worth mentioning when a Republican President lies about the reason we're stuck in a war we can't win? Why can't The Captain stop talking about politics?

Well, I can answer the last one. It's DNC week in Boston, so if you're a Democrat in Massachusetts, you're likely to be a wee bit obsessed for a few days. And since I am, and I am (any resemblance to a pretty funny Lotus ad campaign from the 90's is purely coincidental, especially if you're a lawyer for Big Blue...), I guess I'm going to be. If you follow...

PS Great, now I've google-bombed the damn thing. Fine, as long as anybody looking for that quote reads the rest of the post too...
