Where can I go to get odds on this? Vegas? Jersey?

It's a sucker bet. Barack Obama will be President of the United States within the next 20 years. Period. If you saw him speak last night at the DNC, you know what I mean.

Obama is a candidate for US Senate from Illinois (and he will win - by a landslide). He's currently a state senator and this is his first foray into national politics. But you'd never know it.

He's eloquent, intelligent, charismatic, articulate, engaging, and an all-around brilliant speaker. He's the child of an immigrant and the living embodiment of the American Dream. He will replace the shadows of your cynicism about politicians with the bright light of his hope and passion for American democracy. I kid you not: Barack Obama is the real thing.

Oh, yeah, and he's black. Yep, you heard me right. So if you know any bigots, you may want to warn them. The US will have a black President soon, and that man will be Barack Obama.

Listen to his speech. At least read it, and try to imagine the best speaker you could possibly dream up saying those words. Here is a RealPlayer version of the speech from NPR, and here is the text.

Really. You owe it to yourself to watch the speech. The words are impressive, but his delivery is phenomenal. I literally cannot say enough about it. You must see it. Everyone should see it.

1 - He will replace the shadows of your cynicism about politicians with the bright light of his hope and passion for American democracy.

Man, I hope so. I don't believe any of them, and I tend to believe liberals less, although I'm pretty liberal in some areas (abortion, protecting national parks and wildlife (I ain't no PETA member, though- I like to eat bambi and other cute fuzzy animals),etc.), but the bottom line for me is that most politicians (and I mean damn near all) are only out to do good as long as it gets them re-elected. I am totally cynical when it comes to politics. I hate to argue it because it NEVER boils down to true right and wrong, so what's the point? It ALWAYS boils down to polls and appearance and photo-ops and an opportunity to get re-elected. Well, that and money. So arguing about issues should be based around who had the cooler commercials, who spun the issues properly and avoided the hot subjects deftly enough. That's worth arguing because that is the true indicator of who's going to win.

The whole political scene is summed up for me by the fact that the DNC was covered on Entertainment Tonight last night. Entertainment. Yeah, that's it. The only sad thing is, we have to live with the results that those clowns (and I mean all of them, not just the Democrats) produce.

I did see Barak Obama on Entertainment Tonight (yeah, I was watching it- sometimes there's hot chicks on that show, ok?) and he seemed very confident and at ease. I was pretty impressed with him despite my natural distaste for all that is polislickal.

So, I hope you're right. It would be nice to see a rare sincere political figure out there.

2 - Seriously, Tom. Watch his speech. I'm just as cynical as you are about slimy politicians, and this man blows me away. You'll like him, man. You will. You may not agree with him on some issues, and you may not want to vote for him when he runs nationally (not if), but you'll still like and respect him. And I think you'll be a little more optimistic about the future. I know I am, and all the gods know I never expected to be...

3 - I agree he's impressive. Very much so. He should have a bright future. Twenty years is a long time to project, however. Rather than predicting that he'll be President within 20 years, I'd only go out on a limb and say that he'll be either Edwards' or Hillary Clinton's VP running mate in 2008 (if Kerry loses in 2004), or Edwards' VP candidate in 2012 (if Kerry wins in 2004, and whether or not Kerry wins in 2008).

4 - Rich, I think you're right that he'd be a solid candidate for VP if Kerry/Edwards win and Edwards runs in 2012. If they lose, though, I could see him beating out Hilary in the primaries. She has her fans, but she has legions of enemies as well. She's very polarizing, and Democrats might choose healing over renewed partisan battles.

You're absolutely right, though - predicting 20 years of American politics is impossible. I still stand by my original subject line, though: if anybody would take the action, I'd bet on Obama as President soon. I might lose, but I'll take my chances with Obama, and be happy about it...
