Serenity

Saw it Saturday night. Liked it. A lot. Really.

I know, that's hardly surprising. After all, I'm a huge scifi geek, and a major Joss Whedon fan, and I loved the TV series. All that being said, it's still a really good movie. My wife, who never saw the TV series (and was not a Buffy/Angel fan, either), liked it enough to start clapping at the end. Other people in the audience clapped as well. Me, I'm not a clapper. But I know why they clapped. And I can count on one hand the number of movies I've seen that have generated applause from the audience.

I won't go into detail about the movie because I don't want to spoil the plot for anyone. But I will say this: if you haven't already done so, make plans to see it. It doesn't matter if you watched the TV series (I didn't tell my wife anything about it), the movie stands on its own.

Congratulations, Joss. Nicely done, sir.

1 - Can't wait for this to be released in the UK - special previews next weekend!

2 - I actually clapped in reaction to the joke at the end. But, don't get me wrong, it was a very good movie. I knew next to nothing about the series before seeing the movie and I find myself planning a Firefly DVD viewing.

I think some of the stuff that didn't make sense to me, because I hadn't seen the series, was subtle and trivial to the plot line. And it will be fun to catch those details when I see the movie again, after watching the series.

3 - I saw it this weekend too, and while I liked it, I was a little letdown too. I guess I had been anticipating it for so long that it was inevitable. I was surprised at how dark it was. I thought Mal was more ruthless and less noble than he was in the tv series. I also wished that the reason the Alliance was after River had been bigger. It seemed to me that the crew gave up so much and wreaked so much havoc and it was kind of a let down. Having said all that, it was a good movie, and gave me my Whedon fix, which is always welcome. It was nice to get some new content seeing as I have just about worn out my Buffy and Firefly dvds. And yes, I know, I need to get a life. BTW, have you seen this? http://datelinehollywood.com/archives/2005/10/03/joss-whedon-grocery-list-garnering-huge-internet-buzz/ I'm pretty sure its a joke, though it took me, a slavish fan, several minutes to see it. Very, very funny.

4 - I saw the film last weekend, and really enjoyed it. Shame about Jane though.
