IBM Responds

Credit Where Credit Is Due Department.

Now that I've beaten up IBM publicly (twice), I believe a bit of fairness is in order. There is a new comment posted tonight in response to my complaints about the process of setting up Eclipse for Notes 8, and in that comment we are told that the issue is real, is known, and is (or will be soon) solved:

Yes, the setup for Eclipse environment for Notes 8 can be painful with the betas. The following is direct from the development team "The items that are called out in the blog are exactly the set of items that the [upcoming] Expeditor Toolkit simplifies with respect to configuration and launch. The Expeditor toolkit will provide a much better experience for developers than the current set of instructions provided with Notes beta or Sametime."

- Happy coding.

Many thanks to Mark Jourdain of IBM for tracking down and posting the information. I am looking forward to the release of the appropriate version of the Expeditor Toolkit. Hopefully it will arrive soon after Notes 8 ships, and we will all be happy coders indeed.

Don't worry, tomorrow I'll be back to ranting about the deficiencies inherent in everything IBM has ever done. But when they get it right, they deserve the "props" as well.

1 - And that makes your posts recently worth while. Getting an answer from IBM stating that they will solve the problem will make one of the main issues you blogged about go away (well... hopefully - we have not seen it yet).

So.. something constructive came out of your rant (which really wasnt a rant at all since you highlighted the good as well as the bad and ugly).

2 - Good stuff. I've played with Expeditor a fair bit, and some of the tools in Rational etc. help simplify this. Not the XML configuration stuff though... Ooof, still plenty of places to get that wrong! Emoticon

4 - The Expeditor Toolkit 6.1.1 is now available for download. It includes a version of Expeditor that can be used to build and test applications. Once Notes 8 is available, you just need to modify the configuration in the "Client Services" preferences page to launch Notes 8 from the tools.

5 - The toolkit can be downloaded here->{ Link }

To launch Notes, Sametime, or Expeditor from Eclipse it is literally just several clicks away.

6 - @Bob and @Pierre - Thanks, I have downloaded and installed the toolkit, and it works as promised. In fact, I owe you guys a main topic post about it - it's in the queue.
